Nowadays, you can find a number of digital cameras available in the market, including compacts, bridge and SLR cameras. The sheer number of models that brands like Canon, Sony, and Nikon cameras roll out almost every quarter makes choosing the right one for you an often daunting task. However, for most photo enthusiasts, Nikon camera are perceived as the most reliable as well as offer the best bang for one’s buck.

Point-and-shoots are the most portable of the three. They have fixed lenses, and are perfect for everyday use since they don’t require much from the user. They are as their names say they are just point then shoot. One downside to them though is that you typically don’t have as much control over things like exposure and aperture. Still, they do come with plenty of preset picture modes which you can change according to the kind of subjects you are taking a picture of.All in all, they are great for beginners.

Digital SLRs, such as Nikon D3x, are the heaviest among the different camera varieties. With size comes great power, and they are packed with features, have multiple controls, interchangeable lenses, and give the best image quality. As one would expect, because DSLRs have so many capabilities and features, they would set you back a thousand dollars or more. DSLRs like Nikon D3x are for more advanced users.

Super zooms bridge the gap between compacts and digital SLR cameras with regards to cost and weight. That is, their price is more towards that of the point-and-shoot variety, but they have the functionality and versatility that would rival that of entry-level digital SLR. A super zoom’s lens is fixed, but quite versatile. These cameras have very long zoom ranges, from 15x to 35x, with photo quality rivaling that of entry level SLRs.

Features vary considerably from model to model. A number of these features might be important to you while some are intended for more specific applications. Deciding which subjects you would like to take pictures of and the effects you would like to apply to your photographs would help you find the best unit and accessories for your needs. Still there are features that all cameras should have, and image stabilization (IS) is an example of such. The image stabilizer in your camera will compensate for shaking movement during hand-held picture taking.

You also have to look at the LCD screen of the camera. Camera enthusiasts suggest getting those with swiveling displays so you can take hard-to-reach shots easier. One often overlooked aspect is the camera’s storage and battery life. These aspects should be considered because it can be very irksome when you run low on these resources while you’re shooting one of a kind or important, but fleeting scenes.
